PIL seeks tribal women’s safety

Most of male members lost lives in mishaps caused on National Highway

Hyderabad: A PIL has been moved before the Hyderabad High Court seeking to direct the Telangana government to take steps for protection of the women-folk living in Peddakunta thanda tribal hamlet of Gollapalli village in Mahbubnagar district.

Ashim Avtar Dash, an IT professional, and two others of the city moved the PIL informing the court that there were no men left in the thanda as most of the male members of the village had lost their lives in road accidents. The petitioners enclosed a copy of a news report carried by this newspaper about the pathetic condition of the women, along with the affidavit.

They submitted that the village has attained notoriety as a “village of highway widows” and the reason for the miserable condition is that the accidents occurred on the bypass road which is connecting with Hyderabad-Bengaluru highway to the village.

They told the court the village headquarters is located on the other side of the highway and those who cross the dreaded stretch to eke out their livelihood normally do not return alive, as, while returning they meet death due to the accidents which happen very frequently.

They submitted that the thanda consists of 35 huts but “there is only one male adult and now practically there are no men left in the village as around 80 men died in road accidents.” Though there was a provision to build a service lane, it was not done till date, they pointed out.

While citing the abysmal depths into which they were thrown with no alternative except to surrender to the sexual exploits of the men-folk, the petitioner urged the court to intervene in the matter.
