Opposition parties slam arrest of Kovan
Ramadoss said that Kovan has only explained how several families were ruined because of liquor
Chennai: Opposition parties led by DMDK chief Vijayakanth slammed the state government for the arrest of Tamil folk singer and Makkal Kalai Ilakkiya Kazhagam (Peoples Art and Literary Association) cultural wing member S. Kovan for campaigning to close the state-run liquor outlets on sedition charges.
Mr Kovan was arrested for the lyrics of two songs, Moodu Tasmac Moodu and Ooruku oru Sarayam, he had penned against the state government and the Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa criticising the liquor policies.
In a statement, Vijayakanth also condemned the arrest and said Kovan was campaigning to eradicate liquor through democratic means. Describing the arrest as anti-democratic, he said it was also an affront on freedom of expression. He urged the state government to withdraw all the cases registered against him and release him immediately.
PMK founder Dr Ramadoss said that Kovan has only explained how several families were ruined because of liquor. He agreed that some portion of the lyrics of the song penned by Kovan could not be supported. CPI (M) state secretary G. Ramakrishnan also condemned the arrest and slapping of sedition charges against Kovan and termed it as an attempt to stifle the voice of democracy. He strongly condemned the arrest and demanded his unconditional release, besides withdrawal of all cases registered against him.
