Kadaladi plant work takes off

Tangedco floats bids for consultant
Chennai: With a view to make the state self-sufficient in power generation and to meet future demand, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation has began works to prepare feasibility and detailed project report for setting up of 4,000 MW Kadaladi Ultra Mega Power Project in Ramanathapuram district.
Tangedco has floated bids for appointing consultant to prepare feasibility and detailed project report a month after Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s announcement in the Assembly about setting up of the Rs 24,000 crore power project in Kondunallampatti village of Kadaladi taluk in Ramanathapuram.
The plant would come up on 3,000 acres of land and will have five units of 800 mw capacity each.
A senior Tangedco official said the works are being speeded up considering the future demand. The official added that after awarding of the consultancy, the reports should be made ready in six months’ time.
“Based on feasibility and DP report submitted by the consultant, Tangedco will apply for statutory clearances from the coastal regulatory zone and the ministry of environment and forest,” the official said.
The utility had also appointed consultant for preparing Marine Environment Impact Assessment study for 1,230 MW each Udangudi stage II and stage III projects. The stage I of the Udangudi project had hit a roadblock after Tangedco board decided to cancel tender for awarding EPC contract and floated a fresh tender.
Tangedco has recently opened bids for the 1,600 mw Uppur and 800 mw North Chennai Stage III supercritical thermal power plants. Two companies — BHEL and Doosan Power Systems Pvt ltd have participated in the bids for the power projects. The Uppur thermal power plant would be built at a cost of
Rs
9,600 crore in Tiruvadanai in Ramanathapuram district. While the 1X800 mw North Chennai Stage III would come up in 190 acres of land available in the existing NCTPS plant site itself at a cost of Rs 4,800 crore.
