Hyderabad to experience water rationing

Limited water supply to begin from November 1

Hyderabad: Certain city pockets will receive reduced water supply in November and December. Metro Water Board officials plan to draw 7 million gallon a day less from the source, keeping in mind the drying up of the Manjeera, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar and Singur reservoirs. The Krishna Phase III (45 MGD) and Godavari scheme can only fill the gaps once commissioned.

Though the state government has announced that Godavari water will be supplied by December, and all hurdles to the pending Krishna Phase 3 will be cleared by November 15, the ground reality is different. The Krishna Phase 3 faces two hurdles — at Prashasannagar- Jubilee Hills and Tolichowki.

The pipeline network for the Godavari scheme is incomplete. With the Metro Board drawing less water as part of the contingency plan. the areas that would receive less supply will be Charminar, Chandrayangutta, Bahadurpura, Malakpet, Yakutpura, Ameerpet, Musheerabad, Narayanguda, Singur and surrounding areas, Kukatpally, Balanagar, Rajendranagar, Hyderguda, Krishna Phase 1 and 2 surrounding areas and Moosapet.

However, the areas already facing huge crisis and mostly dependent on tankers such as Gachibowli, Serilingampally, Madhapur, Jubliee Hills, Khairatabad, Banjara Hills, Quthbullapur, Chinthal and Jeedimetla will suffer further.

Areas like Karwan, Vijaynagar, Masab Tank, Goshamahal, Mangalhat, Jiyaguda, SR Nagar, Bhoiguda, Marredpally, LB Nagar, Santhoshnagar and Dilshuknagar will not witness any change in water supply.

A senior officer of the Water Board said, “The Manjeera and Singur reservoirs are getting depleted and have reached the dead storage level. We are forced to stop supply from Majeera and the board’s present source is Singur, Krishna Phases 1 and 2 and 45 MGD from Phase 3.”

“Himayatsagar and Osmansagar have dried up. Earlier we used to draw 25 MGD from Osmansagar but now we are unable to draw even 3 MGD. The remaining part of Krishna Phase and Godavari water can only stabilise the supply,” he said.

The Metro Water Board is trying to complete both the projects by December so that supply is stable from January onwards. Of the total of 172 MGD of Godavari, the board is trying to get 86 MGD immediately, and the contingency plan has been notified to the government.
