Chennai: Have you heard of ‘garbology’? A Chennai-based school has included the subject in its school syllabi. Two foreigners Ribhu Vohra and Chandrah Nusselein who are siblings from Auroville are behind the syllabus. To pass in the subject, students have to segregate waste, manufacture home made paper, generate compost and handle e-waste.
Students of Arsha Vidya Mandir school from class two to higher secondary eagerly shared their project on waste management. The school also has an organic farming site where students are taught recycling biodegradable waste into nutrient-rich compost. They also make paper with the help of wheat grass.
Chandrah Nusselein said, “We wanted the teachers to teach students on waste consumerism. So we came up with kit tools, which is called garbology. We decided how to link waste so that we can see it from different aspects.”
She added that the most important chapter is on waste reduction. Ribhu Vohra said in the exhibition that students have made around 62 projects M. Hitha of class two explained how they manufactured homemade paper. From which they made photo frame, dustbin and many other products. Similarly, students of class six took up the theme e-waste and made pen stands, photo frame using e-waste.
A.S. Hrithikaasree, a student, said, “ We enjoyed doing this project as this subject helped us to think in an innovative way how we can use waste products.” School principal V. Thiagarajan said, “ This exhibition is just to educate students and also to set examples for other schools.”
