Children of Heaven at Manaveeyam Veedhi
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chalachitra Academy will screen the Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi’s classic, Children of Heaven, at Manaveeyam Veedhi on November 1. The viewing, which will have Malayalam subtitles, will begin at 6.30 pm. The screening has been organised in association with the Manaveeyam Theruvorakootam collective.
Considered a visual masterpiece, the film depicts the story of two siblings Ali and Zahra and the charm in their small world amidst a real world of struggles and deprivation. Released in 1997, ‘Children of Heaven’ depicts the lifestyle and customs of sub urban Iran and its underprivileged people.
The film was nominated for the Academy Award in the category of ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ the very next year, but eventually lost to Italian movie ‘Life is Beautiful’.
The popularity of ‘Children of Heaven’, a family drama, among film critics and movie lovers is evident from the fact that ‘it was screened in almost all major film festivals in Europe, South America and Asia during 1999-2001.
