Sexual harassment plea against registrar of a deemed university
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Registrar of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, a deemed university, seeking his response on a sexual harassment complaint by a woman employee.
The court after hearing senior counsel M.N. Krishnamani also issued notice to the University and the HRD Ministry and posted the matter for further hearing after four weeks.
The woman employee in her appeal submitted that she had adopted a four-and-half month old baby girl in August 2007 and applied for adoption leave. The Registrar questioned her for seeking leave, insulted and used filthy and derogatory language attacking her womanhood for not begetting a child on her own and adopting a daughter.
On a representation made by her to the vice-chancellor an inquiry was held but to her shock the report held that her complaint was baseless and fabricated.
The sexual harassment committee of the university held that it was beyond its scope to deal with the complaint. To add insult to injury, the Registrar ordered recovery of Rs 70,000 paid to her and the amount was deducted without any valid reason.
