Ceasefire violations doubled during Narendra Modi rule: Congress

Congress accused BJP of 'divisive politics and targeting of institutions'

Jammu: Congress on Saturday alleged that ceasefire violations by Pakistan have doubled since the BJP-led NDA government took over reins of the country.

"Prime Minister must have understood that the ceasefire violations and incidents of firing and shelling (by Pakistan) have doubled during the period since he took over in 2014 till now as compared to the such incidents since 1972," Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Gulam Ahmed Mir said on Saturday.

Mir, along with vice president of J&K Congress Sham Lal Sharma and some Congress leaders today paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 31st death anniversary at a function here.

"All data on human causalities and loss of property in firing and shelling by Pakistan is with him (PM) and he can compare the two and see it has doubled during his short period," he said.

Mir asked, "Where did the 56-inch chest go. Prime Minister Modi used to proudly say if one head is decapitated, we will behead 10 and we will give them befitting reply so that they (Pakistan) do not raise its head again."

"During the run up to the general elections in 2014, he used to target UPA government by saying we were weak in dealing with such violations. Why is he silent now over repeated ceasefire violations resulting in death and destructions of civilian population," he said.

He also attacked the BJP government over what he alleged its divisive politics and targeting of institutions. "Attempts are being made to re-write history. Questions are being raised on the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru," he said.

While paying tributes to the late Prime Minister, Mir said that her martyrdom for the cause of nation's unity and integrity will be remembered for generations to come.

"Her glorious achievements like green revolution, 20-point programme, bank nationalisation, Pokhran-I and Garibi Hatao programme will always remind us of her great contribution in the building of modern India," he said.
