Vijayawada to see massive influx
Vijayawada: The stage is set to witness migrations from various parts of AP as the city is now being treated as a temporary capital. The city has witnessed huge migrations from Prakasam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Vishakapatnam districts in last three decades. As per local authorities, of the total population of 11 lakh people in the city, nearly three lakh people are from the four districts. However, the city’s social and economic structures are also being changed from the migrations.
Once the city was confined to I-Town, Governerpet and a few parts in Mogulrajapuram. However, later it was expanded to various areas. The migrations began based on business chances particularly transport and education. Bezwada emerged as municipality in 1888 and was upgraded as selection grade municipality in 1960. Now it has been expanded as Corporation in a 61.88 square km radius.
People of north Andhra entered the city as Muta workers. Later, they settled in various business establishments including fruits trade. They preferred to settle in present central constituency limits including Singhnagar, Durgapuram and Gandhinagar.
Likewise, nearly one lakh people reached the city from various areas in Prakasam district. Majority of them settled in West constituency limits at Bhavanipuram, Vidyadharapuram and Governerpet. They also formed an association in the name of Malakonda Swamy.
The migrants entered politics and were elected as corporators. Likewise, people from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Punjab also entered the city and settled in wholesale, gold and finance business.
