Andhra Pradesh cancels Chittoor drinking water scheme
The water under the scheme was also to be supplied to industries
Hyderabad: The government has cancelled one more scheme launched by the previous Congress government — the Chittoor Drinking Water Scheme. While the Chief Minister has asked officials to issue a notification, officials replied that this could be done only after a Cabinet approval. The scheme was launched on the basis of a Cabinet decision during the Congress rule, and hence the constraint. A Cabinet meeting is expected on Nov. 2.
The Kirankumar Reddy government floated the Chittoor drinking water scheme at a cost of Rs 7,390 crore, to supply of drinking water to the urban local bodies of Tirupati, Chittoor, Madanapalli, Punganur, Palamaneru and rural areas covering 52 mandals. The water under the scheme was also to be supplied to industries.
The water for this scheme was to be drawn from Kandaleru reservoir. The plan was to take up the project in two phases — the cost of first phase put at Rs 5,990 crore and the second phase at Rs 1,400 crore.
The previous government had also issued orders on giving administrative approval for stage -1 works of Phase -1 and handed over the scheme to the Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (INCAP) for implementation. The government had released some funds to INCAP by way of mobilisation advances.
It was two days ago that Chief Minister Mr Naidu held a review meeting, asked officials to cancel the scheme and issue a notification to this effect. Notably, both Kirankumar Reddy who launched the scheme and CM Naidu hail from Chittoor district.
