Security still a cause of concern in Vijayawada

Implementing AP Public Safety Act a challenge

Vijayawada: Despite Vijayawada becoming the most important part of AP capital Amaravati, people and police of the city are yet to pick up technology to beef up the security and surveillance.

Though the city police wants to have security surveillance at schools, colleges, theatres, commercial establishments and even streets, non-cooperation from other stakeholders are blocking the implementation of AP Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Act-2013. As per the Act, CCTV cameras must be installed at all places where more than 100 persons gather.

City police once planned to entrust colony associations to install CCTV cameras on all roads but people turned down the proposal citing various reasons.

Police officers have been asking owners of banks, hotels, lodges and all other multistory buildings to install the surveillance systems so that movements of miscreants can be tracked. This would be helpful in case a mishap takes place.

While the newly started establishments have set up the surveillance systems, old buildings in the city do not have any such measures and the police are left clueless when house breakings take place.

“We are educating people every now and then to have CCTV cameras. CCTV's also scare thieves who fear being caught,” said a police officer.

It may be mentioned here that a techie was arrested with the help of CCTV footage which captured him trying to break into a house in the city recently.

Meanwhile, city police are gearing up to take up campaigns to educate people on the benefits of having CCTV systems installed on their premises and establishments.
