Needless honking irks Kozhikode residents
KOZHIKODE: With just a day left for the Local self- governing body elections, it is obvious that political leaders in the state want to be on time for their various commitments. So those directly or indirectly associated with leaders have made it a practice to trouble people with non-stop honking of their vehicles, so as to move fast through traffic.
Rattled by the blaring election campaigns and the honking of motor cars, a forum fighting against the increasing menace of noise pollution in the city, has demanded that the district administration immediately tackle the issue which is becoming a grave concern.
“It has been noticed that even a car with the garland of a political party is creating noise pollution by continuous honking”, said Ahammed Ali, a shopkeeper near Nadakkavu.
City folks have also pointed out that the car of a prominent politician is followed by more than 15 Innova cars each carrying two persons.
According to Pollution Control Board Senior Engineer Feroke Sayed, there is a deafening silence with regard to noise pollution.
“Noise can be defined as an unwanted or undesired sound. Vehicle honking in traffic wears the dubious cap of being the largest noisemaker throughout the world. Unnecessary honking causes noise pollution”, he further added.
Although District Collectors have warned political party leaders to avoid noise pollution in the city during the election season, in terms of using loudspeakers or continuous honking, none of these leaders has bothered to follow the rules.
