Folk singer held on sedition charge
TIRUCHI/ CHENNAI: Claiming that a folk singer with a radical left leaning had crossed all boundaries of decency in criticising the Tamil Nadu government and had unleashed a personal attack on Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, Chennai police arrested S. Sivadas alias Kovan, 45, from his house in Tiruchy early Friday morning.
Tension prevailed for a while in front of Woriyur police station in Tiruchy following the arrest. Volunteers of Makkal Kalai Ilakkiya Kazhagam, assembled in front of the police station, protesting against the arrest of their party activist. Soon after arrest, Kovan was brought to Chennai for being remanded to judicial custody.
Explaining three IPC sections, including sedition charges, under which Kovan was booked, a senior police officer said he had created enmity between different groups by targeting every state policy and attacking the Chief Minister personally.
Apart from booking him for sedition (section 124 A) IPC, Kovan was also booked under IPC sections 153 and 505 (1). According to insiders in Chennai cyber cell, which arrested Kovan, the folk singer initially resisted the arrest, but later regained his calm and said he was ready to face action legally.
Police said Kovan had been associated with Makkal Kalai Ilakkiya Kazhagam, an outfit involved in revolutionary activities. “The arrest was not because he criticised the government or liquor policy. In the song, he criticised every policy of the government, crossed all lines of decency and attacked the CM personally,” a senior city police officer said.
