Chennai corporation unlikely to take up new works

The civic body is unlikely to take up any new work to address the city’s perennial issues
CHENNAI: With the Chennai corporation’s council entering its fifth year, the civic body is unlikely to take up any new work to address the city’s perennial issues of parking and illegal buildings in commercial pockets like Parry’s, T. Nagar and Pursawalkam. Motorists struggling with traffic snarls will continue to suffer bottle necks for the next one year.
“We are now ready for the monsoon and this mode will prevail till January. After that, the corporation will focus on Assembly elections, where Chennai corporation will be the district election authority for Assembly constituencies. Later, the corporation has to gear up for the local body polls”, explained a corporation official adding that no new major project to address traffic congestion like multi-level parking or an elevated corridor work is to be taken up.
In Tuesday’s council meet there was no agenda on parking issues and with metro rail work progressing at snail pace at Broadway and Poonamallee high road, there is no immediate scope for traffic decongestion projects, the official quipped.
The CMDA’s second master plan recommendation related to traffic congestion and the promised multi-level parking lots in Broadway and T Nagar hangs in the balance for the past four years without any progress, rues DMK corporation floor leader Subash Chandra Bose.
