Ethnicity in contemporary

The Tewaris’ apartment in Lower Tank Bund is an uncluttered, well-lit wonder

Till the time the door opens, one will think that Dr Ajay Tewari and his wife Shweta’s apartment at Lower Tank Bund is like any other in the city. But it’s a different story inside.

A well-lit home with hues of gold here and there, their 2,000 sq. ft apartment, where they live with their son Aryavir, is a wonder.

Golds and greens: The formal living room

At the entrance is the living room which has green sofas and dull gold cushions. A partition separates this space from their dining hall which could almost pass off as a second living space. With beige sofas and red cushions, the space also has a very ethnic touch.

That’s the interesting concept of their home, mixing ethnicity with contemporary. “We wanted a house that looked ‘lived in’. Also, I keep travelling, so I keep collecting memoirs and somehow all of them have had an Indian touch till now,” says Shweta, with a smile. Interior designer Sona Chatwani adds, “We added the Indian arts and crafts without cluttering the house. Simple straight lines with the use of the colour white with accents, is how we designed the interiors.”

There’s nothing artificial in their home. “We didn’t bury the house with woodwork. Also, there’s nothing artificial here. If there’s a plant inside, it’s an actual plant,” says Shweta.
While the master bedroom is done all in white and blue, Aryavir’s room is done up just the way he wanted — with his favourite superhero Spiderman everywhere.
