Khammam students suffer from IBS
Many patients face stressful times and complain of discomfort & constipation
Khammam: Changing food habits and irregular timings among youngsters, especially students is a major reason for the increased incidence of irritable bowel syndrome and other gastrointestinal problems like inflammatory bowels syndrome in the town. About 10 to 15 students in the age group of 20 to 30 years are consulting physicians to treat their abdominal problems. It starts with abdominal pain, constipation, and the feeling of incomplete bowel movement. Gradually, the situation became worse. The doctors identify it as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). There are 20 engineering and other degree colleges in and around Khammam town and 60 per cent of the students are from rural areas. They live in rented rooms and eat all meals at hotels.
K. Srinivas, resident of Madhira, is studying third year in engineering in Khammam and eats in a mess. “I am facing different problems due to the continuous eating in hotels. This irregular bowel movement is upsetting and I am finding it hard to concentrate on my studies,” he said.
Doctors say there is a gradual increase among young patients, in the age group of 20-30 years, seeking medical help for IBS. The reasons, they say, are stress and lifestyle disorders. Many patients are facing stressful times for whatever reason and complain of discomfort, constipation, and the feeling of incomplete bowel movement.
Physician G.R.K. Murthy said that the fast food, oily and fried food eaten regularly at odd timings apart from alcohol and cigarettes are the culprits. Those who suffer from IBS have highly sensitive muscles in the bowels. They should desist from eating at hotels and opt for simple basic food available in most hostel canteens.
