A shimmering embroidered curtain has opened on one of the speculated-upon celebrity-romances in recent times. Cricketer Harbhajan Singh and actress Geeta Basra who were rumoured to be a pair for over eight years, have finally made it all official.
In a ceremony attended by close relatives and friends the couple exchanged marriage vows through Sikh rituals at a Gurdwara in Jalandhar. The wedding was attended by no member of the film industry. Says a source from Jalandhar, “Only Sachin Tendulkar and wife Anjali were from Harbhajan’s side and no one from the film industry attended from Geeta’s side.”
But a lavish reception was hosted later in the day. Geeta and Harbhajan have been extremely quiet about their relationship. However on July 3 this year, as cricketer Harbhajan Singh turned 35, he went public with his long-standing relationship with his girlfriend, actress Geeta Basra in a very unusual way. In Punjabi filmmaker Smeep Kang’s Second Hand Husband (in which Geeta Basra played one of the leads), Harbhajan Singh makes a surprise guest appearance at the end of the film as the man Basra finally chooses to marry.
Sources close to the couple say this was their special way of going public with their relationship. “Bhaji and Geeta have always firmly denied any marriage plans. But the entire cricket fraternity calls Geeta, ‘bhabhiji’. And we all knew their marriage was definitely happening,” a source added.
