NTR Stadium earns Rs 70 crore for civic body

But, an RTI has revealed that the revenue of GHMC sports department is Rs 4.7-cr since 2008
Hyderabad: The annual income of the NTR Stadium at Kavadiguda is over Rs 70 crore. However, an RTI query has revealed that the revenue of the GHMC sports department, since 2008 till date, is only Rs 4.7 crore.
Like parks and flyovers, sports complexes that had been built in 2008 still await inauguration. Following a complaint on mismanagement of funds in the sports department, an enquiry was made by the vigilance wing but the report has not been made public. After town planning and property tax, the sports department is the third highest revenue generator in GHMC. B. Sambi Reddy, general secretary Lok Satta, Greater Hyderabad, said, “The GHMC is not concerned about the completion of much-needed projects started between 2007 and 2014, incurring an expenditure of almost Rs 40.88 crore. The sports complex in Hindinagar, sanctioned in 2008, is still awaiting construction. The complex in Musheerabad, completed last year, is not put to any use as it is waiting for an inauguration by sports minister.
“As against a requirement of 5,000 playgrounds, Hyderabad has no more than 500. The completion of these 11 projects will benefit students and sportspersons,” he said.
The RTI reply on revenue collected, meanwhile, has raised a lot of questions. When the annual income of NTR stadium alone is Rs 70 crore, how can the department’s income from 2008 till now be only Rs 4.7 crore? Expenditure for the same period, including yearly summer camps and outdoor inter-state competitions, is Rs 47.35 crore. Also, the sports equipment that were for bought for more than Rs 14 crore are rotting in GHMC gyms.
