MLA threatens to block garbage trucks to KCDC
‘Waste treatment plant being turned into a landfill like Mandur’
BENGALURU: Following reports of unscientific management of waste, Bommanahalli constituency MLA Satish Reddy on Thursday threatened that entry of garbage trucks into the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) located in his constituency will be blocked.
At the BBMP monthly meeting he said that as per the agreement 100 tonnes of wet waste were to be sent to KCDC for composting. But, everyday over 300 tonnes of mixed waste is being sent, thereby hampering composting and the stench is unbearable.
The KCDC plant is being turned into a landfill like Mandur. People living nearby are falling prey to diseases and respiratory problems.
If the BBMP doesn’t mend its ways, he along with members of resident welfare association would block the trucks entering KCDC, he added.
Reddy gave an invitation to BBMP Commissioner G. Kumar Naik and other authorities to stay near KCDC for a night and he would make arrangements for lodging, he said.
In reply, Bommanahalli Chief Engineer Bettegowda said that KCDC has been directed not to accept non-segregated waste. Mayor directed the Commissioner to take over KCDC, as BBMP was spending money for the maintenance of the plant. Further, the capacity of the plant will be enhanced to 500 metric tonnes.
