Bar bribery case: Govt planning to file appeal against order

The probe will have to be entrusted with the SP of Vigilance Special Investigation Unit - I

Thiruvananthapuram: The government is planning to file an appeal against the Vigilance special court order rejecting the final report in the bar bribery case and ordering further investigation.

According to sources, the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau would object to the directive of the court to the investigation officer to conduct a further probe and form an independent opinion.

Also the observation at this stage that there was prima facie evidence for Mr Mani accepting bribe could be challenged. Vigilance deputy director of prosecution G. Saseendran will send a report in this regard to the government seeking permission to file an appeal, said sources.

Since the court directed the 'investigation officer' to conduct a further probe, the probe will have to be entrusted with the SP of Vigilance Special Investigation Unit - I. Mr. Sukesan who earlier did the investigation and suggested charge-sheeting of Mani, is still serving as SIU-I SP.

“If the government wants to entrust the probe to another officer, he should be posted as SP of SIU-I in place of Sukesan,” said sources.
