Chennai: More than a month after Thiruchengode DSP Vishnupriya killed herself following work pressure and alleged harassment from higher ups, a 27-year-old fireman of Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue services, who tried to kill himself three weeks ago, died in a fire station in Pallipattu in neighbouring Thiruvallur district on Wednesday night under mysterious circumstances.
The deceased was identified as P. Manikandan, who joined the department on compassionate grounds after his father had died in harness as a fire station driver. After Manikandan tried to kill himself in Thiruvannamalai fire station on October 9, he was transferred to Pallipattu station where he collapsed and died on Wednesday night.
Based on a WhatsApp video in which he talks about superiors harassing him and his mysterious death, his relatives believe that Manikandan had committed suicide but the police say he died of a heart attack.
Manikandan, a native of Tiruvannamalai, collapsed after dinner at around 11 pm on Wednesday and was taken to Sholinghar Government Hospital by 108 Ambulance where the doctors declared him dead on arrival.
“Doctors told us that Manikandan died of a cardiac arrest” said a senior police official. Pallipattu police informed Manikandan’s family that he developed seizures and collapsed and that he was taken to Sholinghur GH. Manikandan was a bachelor and the family was planning for his marriage by January. In his complaint while working in Thiruvannamalai, the deceased had levelled serious allegations against his superiors. After this, Manikandan was targeted by those against whom he had given a complaint.
An upset Manikandan consumed pesticides on October 9 and was discharged from treatment after a while. The suicide attempt had also resulted in a mass transfer in Tiruvannamalai fire station. In a video he himself shot which Manikandan circulated in WhatsApp to his friends, he talks about harassment by his superiors and his plan to commit suicide.
