Home is where the ‘haunted’ are
It’s that time of the year, when the young and the restless throw spooky parties at their homes, to celebrate Halloween with friends
Wearing the Joker’s face and heading to a club where a DJ spins tunes all night long is now, apparently, something that can pass off as a passé. With Halloween creeping up on us over a weekend this year, most club crawlers are headed to houses – not for trick or treating, but to spook it up with house parties! These parties are more than just funky décor or guests having their eyes glued to the door to see who walks in as what.
If you’re a person who values company above all else, this is your place to shine. “Owing to it being invite only, it’s a tight crowd and you already know most people, or are okay with getting to know them, unlike at a public event,” says 27-year-old Viraj Chamria who’s bringing in Halloween at his friend Nikita M’s bash. House decked in carved pumpkins, dangling bats, skulls and spiders, Halloween is an exciting time for Nikita. “It’s a small, intimate gathering of about 20 people and this time I’m introducing some Halloween-themed cupcakes to the mix,” she says, still trying to one-up her referee costume from last year.
Although Halloween is typically not an Indian holiday, it seems to be the most beloved. “Most people hosting them have either studied abroad or have been brought up there and are excited to bring a piece of that culture back home,” says Viraj, excited about slipping into Tom Cruises’s flight suit from Top Gun this year around. And who’s complaining? With larger-than-life costumes, creative décor and food, it’s time to get your freak on! “Halloween is a great time to get naughty and bring all your fantasies to life,” says Resham Gupta, a Bach flower therapist and lifestyle photographer from the city. Her most memorable moment was stepping into a Halloween house party – her husband dressed as a flasher with skin coloured clothes under his long coat and she as a lady cop complete in boots, cap, baton and a short skirt. “The shock on everyone’s face was priceless. The best part was when I finally got to use the handcuffs!” she laughs.
For families, it’s a time to get together and a chance to put on their creative hats. “This year, we’re going to be The Adam’s Family! We’ve already pulled out the cob webs, black curtains, tall lit candles, dry ice and gothic Victorian outfits,” says Shruthi Sudhir, whose three kids are excited as can be. Owing to the fact that she’s a patisserie chef and cofounder of Battered Up, there’s a whacky spread of eats as well. The red wine fountain at the entrance is just the beginning to a table adorned with mummified sausages, blood spewed pizza, red jelly and cream slime and bloody booze shots in syringes. Where are you headed for a spook-tacular time this Halloween?
