No trace of abducted medical student, cops suspect fake kidnapping
Chennai: Two days after a 19-year-old medical student was reportedly kidnapped for a ransom of Rs 1.5 crore, the police are still clueless about the whereabouts of the boy. They are hoping that the boy could have possibly staged his own kidnapping, inspired by the hit Tamil movie Soodhu Kavvum.
The boy, Ajmal, son of doctor couple Riyazudeen-Waheeda, left from his home in Tambaram on Tuesday morning saying that he was going to his college, Balaji medical college in Pallavaram, where he was a second year MBBS student. Ajmal’s parents run N S Hospital in West Tambaram.
“His phone was switched off on that day and his parents could not contact him. On Wednesday morning, at around 9.20 am, his mother received a phone call from Ajmal’s kidnappers. The caller demanded a ransom of Rs 1.5 crore and threatened dire consequence if she informed the police. The caller said he would call again inform about the place where the ransom money had to be delivered.
On Wednesday, Dr Waheeda received another phone call from the kidnapper. She told them that she may have difficulties in mobilising such a huge amount of money.
Ajmal’s mother received another phone call again that warned her not to inform police officials about the kidnapping.
Meanwhile, based on the information provided, police started probe into the alleged abduction. “Our initial enquiries revealed that the boy had been not attending the college for the last 10 days. The so-called kidnapper has been calling only Ajmal’s mother and not his father. There was no call since Wednesday afternoon. All this does not really add up,” a senior police officer noted. Police look at this kidnapping as a conspiracy, similar to the movie Soodhu Kavvum, in which a politician’s son stages his own kidnap to extract money from his father.
“We have formed special teams to track owners of the mobile number from which Ajmal’s mother received calls. We are hoping to crack the puzzle by night,” the officer added.
