CHENNAI: The Madras high court has directed Kollywood lyricist Vairamuthu Ramasamy to appear before the court for his remarks alleging that “judges become corrupt towards the end of their career”. A Division bench of Justices Satish K. Agnihotri and K.K. Sasidharan, before which a petition from film financier S. Mukanchand Bothra of Sowcarpet, came up for hearing, has ordered notice to the poet.
The petitioner has prayed the court to initiate suo motu contempt against lyricist Vairamuthu Ramasamy, for allegedly undermining the dignity and integrity of judges during his speech on September 12. He submitted that lyricist Vairamuthu addressed a gathering during the centenary celebration of late Justice P.S.Kailasam organised at Vidyodaya Auditorium in T. Nagar. Among others dignitaries, Chief Justice of Madras high court Sanjay Kishan Kaul, actor Rajinikanth and former Union finance minister P. Chidambaram also addressed the gathering.
The petitioner submitted that in his speech Vairamuthu had said: “Just as judiciary is watching the society, the society is also watching the judiciary. There are certain judges who are like Lord Rama. They are like fire and live like fire. They maintain this integrity all the time till six months prior to the retirement.” “In his speech, Vairamuthu created doubt about the faith, integrity, purity of the judges among the public, especially about judges who are on the eve of retirement. The impression one gets from such a statement is that all the judges are corrupt towards the end of their term,” Bothra said. The bench adjourned the matter for further hearing after four weeks.
