UDF puts up united face
Top guns come together, campaigning tempo to change in next phase
KOCHI: Based on the widespread impression of its lackadaisical election campaigning, the UDF top honchos in the district have put up a united face and came on a single platform to announce that the Front is all set to enter the final lap of electioneering.
In a rather unprecedented manner, all UDF ministers, MLAs, MPs, mayor and GCDA chairman organised an extensive media interaction in an effort to pep up the dull campaigning and to announce its next vibrant phase with a new dimension.
During the media interaction, UDF top leadership including ministers K. Babu, V.K Ebrahim Kunju, Prof K.V Thomas MP, MLAs Dominic Presentation, Benny Behanan, Hibi Eden, GCDA chairman N. Venugopal, Mayor Tony Chammany and district congress committee president V.J Paulose briefed the media about the achievements made during the term of the Congress-led council and sought support to give a second chance to take forward the projects.
"In the next phase of campaign, the UDF will give a new dimension focusing on the development agenda. We hope the city residents will vote for the continuation of the UDF-led corporation council to help it in completing the series of development projects being initiated during the last five years," said K. Babu.
Meanwhile, Mayor Chammany added that from now onwards, the UDF will shift focus from the ward-level issues to the pan-city development and the projects proposed for next five years. "During the last five years, Rs 400 crore has been spent at division-level development projects which is the highest amount spent by any council in Kochi," he said.
'Rebels, SNDP-BJP not to hit UDF prospects'
Despite facing presence of heavyweight rebel candidates in many divisions in elections to Kochi Corporation, the UDF leadership claimed that rebels would not make any impact on its poll prospects.
Minister K. Babu refuted reports on new political alliances and presence of rebels dampening the chances of UDF candidates.
"Rebels are significant only during the initial days of campaigning. In the final stage, only the politics and development agenda of the UDF will matter. The SNDP's new political move also can't make any impact here," he said.
