Metro water gets monsoon ready
Depot engineers will monitor their respective areas for sewer overflow or obstructions and water pollution complaints
Chennai: The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board held a meeting to discuss northeast monsoon preparedness, measures to prevent sewage overflow and water pollution.
The meeting was chaired by managing director Dr B. Chandra Mohan and attended by senior officials of the board. Superintending engineers have been posted as nodal officers to closely monitor areas during the monsoon period, an official release said.
Depot engineers will monitor their respective areas for sewer overflow or obstructions and water pollution complaints. Damaged manhole covers will be replaced and preventive maintenance will be expedited, the release said.
The working of sewage treatment plants, water treatment plants and transmission mains should be intensively monitored during the rainy season. “All officers will be available to respond to calls received from public. Staff will be posted in three shifts in the 24 hours Grievance cell No. 4567 4567 and in all area offices on all working days and on holidays,” the release said.
The quality assurance wing would increase the number of sampling during monsoon period from 100 to 150 locations and bacteriological testing would be increased from 60 to 80 locations per day. Arrangements would also be made to operate sewage pumping stations continuously even during power cut with Gen Sets and adequate stock of fuel and other spares has been made available, the release said. Water supply to relief camps will be arranged on request from Chennai corporation.
