Indian Army celebrates October 27 as Infantry Day
Chennai: In a bid to remember and honor members of the Infantry who fought against Pakistani Raiders in Jammu and Kashmir in 1947, the Indian Army celebrated the 69th Infantry Day with traditional solemnity at the Officers Training Academy, Chennai on Tuesday.
Major General, V.D. Chowgule, Officiating Commandant and senior most Infantry officer present in the Academy, laid the wreath at the Martyrs Memorial in OTA Chennai.
Indian Army celebrates October 27 as Infantry Day as it was on this day that an Infantry Company of the First Battalion of the SIKH Regiment was airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar to liberate Kashmir from the invading tribals (who were supported by Pakistan Army).
Another significance of October 27 is that it was on this day in 1947 that India as an independent nation was first time engaged in operations against an aggressor, the spokesman pointed out.
Giving details, Chowgule said Pakistan Army had launched "Operation Gulmarg" in early October 1947 using tribals to annex Jammu & Kashmir. Hostilities began when tribal rebellion was instigated in Poonch in South-West Kashmir. By October 20, the Pakistan Army entered the conflict in support of tribal forces.
