District Tourism Promotion Council now plans beach tourism circuit

KITCO has been entrusted with the task of preparing the master plan for developing the beaches
Kochi: The Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council is in the process of setting up a tourism circuit linking the beaches of Kuzhuppilly, Cherai and Munambam.
"The main attraction of Kochi is its beaches and backwater rides. However, the former is yet to be explored properly. The beach tourism circuit will be family-friendly, all-seasons destinations and is aimed at increasing the footfalls at the beaches. Currently, only the Cherai beach witnesses tourist visits," said S. Suhas, DTPC secretary.
The Munambam beach is situated at the northern end of Cherai beach, nearly 40 km from city, and is the breakwater point where the Periyar flows into the Arabian Sea. Kuzhipilly beach too is located near the Vypeen islands and is noted for the annual kite festival.
KITCO has been entrusted with the task of preparing the master plan for developing the beaches. The Detailed Project Report will include beautification plans, development of infrastructure such as setting up benches, parking facility, landscaping, toilets, children's play areas and illumination of the areas. "The report would be submitted in a month's time and the work started soon," the official said.
Meanwhile, the DTPC is awaiting nod from the Department of Tourism to commence boat cruises to the islands on the outskirts of Kochi city. "I've written to the tourism department. The nod would be given probably after the local body elections," Suhas said.
