CM Oommen Chandy’s janasamwadam stirs row

Congress replaces Chandy’s janasambarka yatra with ‘public discourse’, irks Opposition
KOZHIKODE: With the Election Code of Conduct in place, temporarily suspending the conduct of ‘Janasambarka Yathra’ of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, the election committee of Congress was quick enough to organise a similar programme ‘Janasamwadam’ (public discourse) to ‘collect innovative ideas on development of Kozhikode’.
Though cautious about the Election Commission’s watchful eyes, Mr Chandy patiently sat with the complaints of common folk at Kozhikode assuring them that their complaints and suggestions would be addressed. Minister M K Muneer and Raghavan MP assisted Oommen Chandy in replying to specific questions regarding local development.
“Election Commission has not barred me from talking to the public. We have not announced any new benefits or schemes during the programme and it was purely an interaction I had with the common public,” Oommen Chandy defended his decision to conduct the programme when the election code of conduct is in place.
The Chief Minister started off the programme around 8.30 am at Kozhikode Jaya Auditorium and the programme went on till 10 am. Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu Road Action Council members demanded that additional funds should be allocated to speed up the works while the traders association demanded that the parking issues in Kozhikode city be addressed. Mr Chandy assured the voters that their problems would be addressed soon.
