Adivasi languages in syllabus sought
Thampu urges child panel to change medium in Anganwadis
Thiruvananthapuram: Thampu, an organisation working for the welfare of Adivasi students, has petitioned the Child Rights Commission seeking a change in the medium of the curriculum for Anganvadis in adivasi areas from Malayalam to Adivasi languages.
This, the argument goes, is because many Adivasi students find it difficult to understand Malayalam.
The students should be initiated into languages like English and Malayalam only through Adivasi language.
They can be introduced to environment, climate, plants, trees, flowers and festivities only by relating them to the local circumstances.
This is the only way through which Adivasi students can be retained in Anganvadis and ensure that they remain in the formal education sector.
The petition also wanted the appointment of only those from Adivasi communities as teachers and helpers in Anganvadis so that students would be free to interact with them in their language.
The menu of the Angavandis should also include the food familiar to Adivasis like Raggi to ensure nutrient content. The petition submitted by Attappadi-based Thampu, to commission chairperson Sobha Koshy pointed out that there are over 36 Adivasi languages in the state. These include languages of tribes like Kurumba, Muduka and Erula, Thampu said.
