India cricketer Amit Mishra’s arrest for alleged physical assault isn’t the only instance

Mumbai: India cricketer Amit Mishra’s arrest for alleged physical assault (later granted bail) isn’t the first instance of cricketers detained for crimes other than match-fixing. Let’s have a look.

Navjot Sidhu: Former India cricketer, also one-time Bharatiya Janata Party MP, Sidhu was arrested for a road rage incident (in 1988) which led to an individual’s death. The cricketer got into a scuffle with Gurnam Singh (a 50-year-old) who died on his way to the hospital.

Wasim Akram (with three others): During Pakistan’s tour of West Indies in 1993, Akram along with Waqar Younis, Aqib Javed and Mushtaq Ahmed were arrested on the beach for possessing an illegal drug, thought to be marijuana.

Mohammad Asif: Pakistan speedster Mohammad Asif – during his heydays (in 2008) – was arrested in Dubai on charges of possessing illegal drugs. The cricketer was returning after his debut IPL tenure. According to reports, Asif was carrying opium.

Luke Pomersbach: In the much controversial IPL (in 2012), Pomersbach – signed up for Royal Challengers Bangalore then – was arrested for allegedly molesting a woman from the US and then, beating up her boyfriend. Later, the Australian was suspended from the remaining games.

Rubel Hossain: The Bangladesh cricketer spent a day behind bars after Naznin Akter Happy, an actress (also his girlfriend at one point) lodged a complaint of ‘rape’ and ‘false promise of marriage’ against the cricketer, ahead of the ICC World Cup 2015.

Andre Fletcher: The West Indies cricketer was arrested at Dominica airport for possessing ammunitions earlier this year. Though Fletcher made his debut in 2008, he is only 15 ODIs, 22 T20 internationals old.

Shahadat Hossain: Fugitive Bangladesh cricketer Shahadat Hossain was remanded in jail on October 5 this year shortly after he surrendered to a court over allegations of beating his 11-year old maid, his lawyer said. Hossain, who has played 38 Tests for Bangladesh, went into hiding more than three weeks ago after police sought his arrest for allegedly abusing the girl he employed illegally in his home.
