Fisheries University alumni to file plea

Sources told Deccan Chronicle, TNFU has decided to take legal recourse and IS preparing to serve notice to AU

Chennai: With the state government refusing to intervene, the rift between Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU) and Annamalai University (AU) deepened on Monday.

The AU has commenced counselling and admission process for Bachelor of Fisheries Science (BFSc) course amid strong opposition from graduates studying in fisheries colleges in Thoothukudi and Ponneri, affiliated to TNFU.

Sources told Deccan Chronicle, TNFU has decided to take legal recourse and IS preparing to serve notice to AU. The Student Association of Fisheries College and Research Institute in Thoothukudi which earlier planned to file a writ petition in the Madras high court challenging AU’s decision, was advised not to do so as the association is headed by the Dean of the college and recognised by TNFU.

“The student association can’t file, but the alumni for College of Fisheries is filing the writ on Tuesday”, a senior faculty member of TNFU said on condition of anonymity. The Alumnae Association general secretary K. S. Vijay Amritraj questioned the hurry in which AU has announced the BFSc course. The AU has advertised on October 22, conducting counselling and admissions on October 26 and starting the course on October 28. He said standard of education will suffer, if AU begins this course. At TNFU and affiliated colleges, the cut-off marks for BFSc degree is equivalent to medical. It’s 97 per cent for general category and 95 per cent for reserved category. However, AU is offering admissions to students even with a pass percentage.
