Fine on Indian fishers won’t affect ties: Sri Lanka minister
Chennai: The decision of the Sri Lankan Government on imposing a hefty penalty of Rs 15 crore on Indian fishermen crossing the border while fishing will not affect the relations with India, Lanka’s minister for urban development Rauff Hakeem has said.
His government would take steps to ensure the proposed fine does not affect the relationship between India and Colombo, Mr Hakeem said during a brief chat with reporters at the airport here on Monday.
He however declined to speak further on the issue but said electing R. Sampanthan as the Opposition leader would improve the relations between the two countries. “He (Sampanthan) will be able to bring up the problems and the requirements of Tamils in the island nation to the notice of the government there,” he said.
