Transgender’s death turns controversial
Visakhapatnam: The ‘suspicious’ death of Sruthi alias Anu, a transgender, has turned a controversy on Monday with over 100 transgenders, under the banner of Naandi Service Society, submitting a representation to city police chief Amit Garg stating that Anu had died naturally and that there was no foul play.
However, a 40-year-old woman, Jyothi, Anu’s neighbour, lodged a complaint with II Town police stating that Surada Yellaji, a leader of the transgender community, also associated with the TD and a VPT employee, with the help of three others, murdered Anu and burnt her body on September 24.
Inspector of II Town PS, P.V. Ramana said Anusha, an orphan and transgender, was living in a rented house at Achiyammapeta. After coming to know that Anu has been suffering from HIV, the house owner asked Yellaji to shift her immediately. About 10 a.m. on September 24, Yellaji and two others reached the house and shifted her to one Chandrakala’s house.
Then Yellaji left the place. However, at 1.30 p.m., Yellaji, along with two other transgenders, returned. Jyoti told police that she saw Yellaji and the other two carrying Anu to an auto-rickshaw. Later, Anu was reportedly cremated at Malkapuram area in the city. Sources said that Anu had eloped with one Kishore, a close aide of Yellaji, a few weeks back. Following a complaint, Kishore was nabbed by police in Vijayawada on September 18, but there was no mention of Anu in any of the report. Sources in police said that both Kishore and Anu were actually caught by Yellaji’s men in Mumbai and brought to Vizag and after that Anu had gone missing.
A senior police officer in the city said that Yellaji has been running an extortion racket with the help of the members of the transgender community. However, Yellaji claimed that he had spent over '1 lakh for Anu’s streatment and that a group of rival TD leaders were trying to tarnish his image. A case has been registered and Yellaji is absconding.
