KOLLAM: A North Indian couple was arrested for allegedly brutally murdering their six-month-old baby for being a girl. The body of the child was found abandoned near the breakwaters at Azheekkal here last week.
Oachira Police arrested Uttar Pradesh natives V. Bashdev (45) and his wife Prathibha (30) from their rented house at Pandakassala in Kayamkulam.
The couple gave a statement to the Police that the baby was tortured for several days before it was killed by hitting its head against the leg of a cot at midnight on October 12.
The body was thrown into the sea at Azheekkal beach the next day after performing the last rites.

The autopsy report also revealed that the baby was murdered. Police trapped the culprits following an extensive search among the migrant labourers settled at Kayamkulam and Karunagappally areas after it received a tip-off that the baby of this North Indian couple went missing a few days back.
“During the first attempt to murder it, the baby was gravely injured and was taken to the Kayamkulam taluk hospital and then to Vandanam medical college. But the couple escaped even as the hospital authorities insisted that they would inform the Police. In the second attempt after a few days, the baby was killed after a blow on its head,” said Vinod Chandran, Oachira SI.
According to Police, it was the second marriage for both of them and that they had only girl children in their first marriage. The husband decided to kill the baby born to them as this child also turned out to be a girl.
The couple has been remanded to Police custody and charged with IPC section 302 for homicide.
