Karayis sure to cost CPM dear: Ramesh Chennithala

Chennithala reiterated that any discussions on who would lead UDF in the Assembly election had not yet taken place
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While condemning the CPM's decision to field murder case accused Karayi Rajan and Karayi Chandrasekharan in the local body elections, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has maintained that the elections will be a referendum on the UDF government's performance and the front could win up to 70 per cent seats.
"Every election is an evaluation of government's performance. I am also happy that there is not much criticism on the functioning of the Home Department," Chennithala said at a meet the press programme organised by Thiruvananthapuram press club.
"The CPM will be again paying the price for favouring violent politics by fielding murder accused. Even Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan who used to react on every issue is maintaining silence on this," he said.
Mr. Chennithala reiterated that any discussions on who would lead UDF in the Assembly election had not yet taken place. "Such discussions will take place only after the local body polls," he said.
Justifying the contests by Congress with other UDF allies, including IUML and Kerala Congress, he said it was quite natural in local body elections. But it would not affect the relationships with in the UDF.
The Home Minister said that a decision on probing allegations against SNDP general secretary Vellapally Natesan with regard to the microfinance controversy as well as further probe into the death of Swami Saswathikananda would be taken after detained analysis.
He also said that the government was only happy to offer an extension of service to Vigilance Director Vinson M Paul who is retiring next month, considering his good track record.
