Marriage was solemnised at Indira Colony in Mangalagiri

Guntur: The marriage of a minor girl could not be prevented as the police and child welfare officials reached the spot minutes late.

The marriage was solemnised at Indira Colony in Mangalagiri on Sunday, just before the police and child welfare officials arrived at the spot.

CI of Mangalagiri Town police station B. Brahmaiah said they rushed to the spot based on information received from district child welfare department.

A case has been booked under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 against parents of the 17-year-old girl and the bridegroom. The police said that the bridegroom M. Ashok, 22, was a distant relative of the girl.

Child Development Project Officer of Mangalagiri B.V.S.L. Bharathi said that they told both the families that the marriage won't be valid till the girl turns 18 years old.
