Chances of migrants’ release brighten

He visited them at Alangad police station to know about their health and current status
Kochi: The possibility of deportation of the two Bangladeshi citizens held at Aluva West Police Station for over a year after being jailed for six months without documents has brightened after Friday’s visit of National Human Rights Commission member Cyriac Joseph.
He visited them at Alangad police station to know about their health and current status.
“The NHRC spoke to the Bangladesh High Commission a few days back, and it was assured that their papers would be ready in two weeks,” Alangad circle inspector Vijayan T.B. said.
It was without any travel permit they came here, and the delay was due to the absence of proper records. Cyriac Joseph told them that things were progressing.
Shahir Fauladhar, 19, and Saiful Fauladhar,27, from Bagerhat in Bangladesh have been staying in Aluva West police station, hoping to join their family back home soon.
It was in February 2014 they crossed the India-Bangladesh border to have a better job here as a solution to the financial crunch.
They hired a house at Manjali and started working as scrap pickers. The police caught them without papers and the court sentenced them to five months in jail and a fine of Rs 1,000 in March 2014. They couldn’t pay the penalty and had to serve another month before coming out in September.
The real ordeal started then with the inordinate delay in getting the papers cleared for their deportation.
“The delay in travel permit is a clear violation of human rights,” said Alangad Aam Aadmi Party unit convener K.S. Abdul Salam, who moved the NHRC.
