Reworked alignment for Kochi Metro extension

KMRL has already completed the peg-marking along the Kakkanad line

Kochi: Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) would submit the reworked alignment of Kochi Metro’s Kakkanad extension by next week.

“Technical activities like drawing have all been completed for the 11-km route. Now the on-the-ground survey is progressing and is in its final stages. There are no major changes except the one in alignment of a few sites to exempt certain high-rises and institutions,” said a KMRL official.

The Kochi Metro Rail alignment of phase II extension from Kaloor Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Infopark via Kakkanad is for a distance of 11.17 km with 12 stations and is estimated to cost Rs 1627 Crore.

Though the Revenue Department completed the survey for the land acquisition in July last, owners of certain buildings approached the KMRL, which asked RITES to review the alignment.

Among the buildings to escape demolition would be that of the Kerala Media Academy near the Civil station and the shrine of Narayana Guru at S N Junction, Palarivattom. KMRL has already completed the peg-marking along the Kakkanad line.

As per the present alignment, the Metro line will pass through Palarivattom, Vazhakkala, Padamugal, Pump junction, Sea Port- Airport Road to reach Infopark at Chittethukara.

A total of 12 metro stations – Kaloor stadium, Palarivattom junction, Palarivattom bypass, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Kunnumpuram, Kakkanad junction, SEZ, Chittethukara, Rajagiri and Infopark-I and Infopark-II, have been planned.
