Distressed Pondicherry toy society moves Madras High Court
Counsel for petitioner M. Gnanasekar contended that members of the society faced difficulties in selling their products
Chennai: Members of the Pondicherry Toy Makers Service Industrial Co-operative Society Ltd have approached the Madras high court highlighting their plight and to prevent entry of new members in the society.
The secretary, G. Manjunath, submitted that the society has been working for the welfare of toy makers. He said, “the society membership is restricted because, nowadays, toys are not moving fast in the market, in view of the changed circumstances and changing interests of the people”.
Counsel for petitioner M. Gnanasekar contended that members of the society faced difficulties in selling their products. This being so, the Puducherry Registrar of co-operative societies and Deputy Registrar (Consumers), Puducherry, sent a batch of applications, received by them, to the society to include the applicants as members.
The society apprehends that the Deputy Registrar would compel it to make the applicants members. Hence, the society sought a directive to the Registrar of Co-operative Societies and the Deputy Registrar restraining them from sending any membership application to the society for admission.
Counsel for the Union Territory, R. Sridhar, submitted that the Deputy Registrar sent the applications to the society and no specific direction was given to it. While disposing of the petition, Justice N. Kirubakaran said there was no compulsion on the part of the petitioner to take the applicants as members of the society. The applications received by the society would be decided by it as per the existing law.
