Dolls resemble role models after artists give them makeovers

Barbies, Disney Princesses and Bratz dolls are turned into “outdoorsy” characters

A welcome breath of fresh air in the form of an online art movement is now the reason why fashion-obsessed dolls are turning into toys that boost the confidence of young children. The trend was first started by Australian artist Sonja Singh with her Tree Change Dolls.

Singh gets Barbies, Disney Princesses and Bratz dolls from the second-hand stores and repurposes them into make-up “outdoorsy” characters, which has also led artists around the world to follow her footsteps, according to the Good News Network.

Another artist, Bobby Jean, who is based in Washington, plans to auction such a doll – which she created without hair in a hospital gown for children undergoing chemo – in order to raise money for a children’s cancer research hospital. Wendy Tsa, a Canadian artist, also transforms Bratz dolls into cultural role models like author J.K. Rowling and Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai.
