Tur dal hoarders may go scot-free

Hoarders will not be punished as they piled up stocks before the anti-hoarding notification came into existence

Mumbai: Despite more than 23,000 metric tonnes of tur pulses being seized from private warehouses, hoarders will not be punished as they piled up stocks of pulses before the anti-hoarding notification came into existence.

Maharashtra minister for food and civil supplies Girish Bapat agreed that the government doubts whether action could be taken against hoarders.

He said, “No doubt hoarding of pulses during the festive season is a conspiracy... But they have stocked up during such days when the anti-hoarding rule was not in existence in the state. If we have to take stringent action against them, it should be approved in court.”

Since Tuesday evening, vigilance teams of the food and civil supplies department raided several private godowns.
