White topping for Hyderabad roads
Cost effective topping on 400 km roads will last 15 years
Hyderabad: Over 400 km of the city’s roads will get layers of white topping. The BT road from PG Road to Paradise Hotel in Secunderabad and the stretch from Umesh Chandra statue at S.R Nagar to Satyam theatre, Ameerpet, will be given a thin layer of white topping.
Also, the stretch from Khan Latif Khan building to Chermas via Sujatha School — Nampally and the roads on Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills will be white topped.
Greater Hyderabd Municipal Corporation officials (GHMC) say that white toppings are prevalent in America, Asian and European countries.
In India, white toppings are being laid in Beng-aluru, Mumbai and Chennai. “Unlike black topped roads, white topped roads are cost-effective, require relatively less maintenance and have a life span of 10-15 years, without any road cuts. The white topping layer keeps the road intact during rains, as it prevents water-logging. This technology uses fly ash and polymeric fibre, besides cement and sand which strengthens the road surface. This composition is said to give the white-topping roads an edge over bitumen,” said a GHMC official.
“It would cost Rs 75 lakh and at least a week to lay one km of white topping. GHMC has also prepared a plan to repair these roads if they get damaged,” he added.
According to Greater Hyderabd Municipal Corporation officials, the parties being finalised to take up the white topping jobs will first have to conduct a survey, design, drawing and carriageway works on all the identified road corridors.
