Hyderabad: Transgender community feels that steps taken for reaching out to the community were just a sham. “The recommendations given in the National Legal Serv-ices Authority (Nalsa) vs. Union of India haven’t been implemented completely. This looks like an attempt to pander to the upper middle class and rich,” said Ms Vyjayanti Vasanta Mogli, a transgender activist from the city and member of Telangana Hijra Transgender Samiti.
She was speaking at a zonal level counselling session organised by the Malkajgiri Police at Alwal on Monday for the transgender community on legal issues and rehabilitation measures. The counselling sessions are being held across the city.
“They aren’t talking about deliberations. All that the department is talking is about is shutting down begging and sex-work. These two are the main occupations for transgenders. They can’t ask us to stop our jobs before providing an alternative income source to us,” she added.
