Karnataka to challenge Tamil Nadu plea for release of Cauvery water
Mr Patil said the sub-committee was convinced about severity of drought in Karnataka
BENGALURU: Water resources minister M B Patil said on Monday that Karnataka would file its counter to Tamil Nadu’s plea in Supreme Court, seeking directions for release of 45.327 TMC Ft water as per the distress formula worked out by Cauvery Water Disputes tribunal.
He told the media after chairing a meeting with technical and legal officers to discuss about the application filed by Tamil Nadu in the apex court that the claim by the neighbouring state would not be maintainable due to insufficient water storage in all dams owing to failure of monsoon. A sub-committee of Cauvery supervisory committee formed to study the situation in the wake of a severe drought in Karnataka was assessing the situation. At this juncture, therefore, the plea would not be maintainable, he added.
Mr Patil said the sub-committee was convinced about severity of drought in Karnataka.
The state government would file a detailed response to Tamil Nadu’s application in due consultation with legal and technical experts after Dasara festivities. “The TN government might have sought release of 45.327 TMC Ft water, but where is water in our reservoirs to be released to that state?”
He said Karnataka had released 101.408 TMC Ft water of the 192 TMC Ft as directed by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, or more than the quantity specified during a distress situation. Mr Patil said the state has decided to go for two part bid to prepare a Detailed Project Report for building balancing, storage reservoirs across the river Cauvery at Mekedatu.
