Kashmiri writer returns award

He return award in protest against the ‘brutal killing’ of Zahid Rasool Butt

SRINAGAR: Eminent Kashmiri litterateur Dr Margoob Banihali has announced to return Sahitya Akademi award in protest against the ‘brutal killing’ of the Valley’s trucker Zahid Rasool Butt by Hindu zealots.

Dr Banihali who is the author of 45 publications in four languages — Kashmiri, Urdu, English and Persian — and was former head of the department of Kashmiri Language and Literature at the University of Kashmir, said that he was shocked over the way Butt was targeted near Udhampur ten days ago.

After seeing his funeral on Monday, which was attended by thousands, he decided to return the Akademi award —both trophy and cash of Rs 1,00,000- as a mark of solidarity.

“It seems, not only the people but trees and plants are also weeping,” he said.
