JD(S) will not contest all upper House seats: HD Deve Gowda
Mr Gowda admitted that his party did not have any presence in six to seven districts
Bengaluru: Former prime minister and Janata Dal (Secular) supremo, Mr H.D. Deve Gowda said his party will not field its candidates in the coming elections to the State Legislative Council from local bodies in six to seven districts where it has no base.
However, he said, JD(S) would field its candidates to all the seats in zilla panchayat and taluk panchayat polls to be held in January next year. Talking to reporters here on Monday, Mr Gowda admitted that his party did not have any presence in six to seven districts like Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Bidar, Vijayapura and Bagalkote.
Even if his party candidates contest, it was not going to make any difference. In the wake of this, Janata Dal (Secular) would only contest from its strongholds and not from those six to seven districts.
The former prime pinister said he and his son, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy who is also state president of the party, would undertake a tour of north Karnataka districts starting from Belagavi ahead of zilla panchayat and taluk panchayat elections.
Local leaders have insisted on their one round of campaigning which was enough to win a good number of seats in elections. The JD(S) was still a force to reckon with in at least 20 districts of the total 30 districts. Mr Gowda categorically said tickets would not be given to party hoppers and those who were not even primary members. Candidates, who were denied tickets in other parties, would join the JD(S) and then return to their original party after they win or lose the elections. Instructions had been given to Mr Kumaraswamy to strictly adhere to this rule without any compromise. Legislators have been asked to identify candidates for ZP/TP polls in their respective districts and inform the same to state unit for enabling distribution of tickets to winnable candidates.
“We are not going to have tie up with other parties in this election,” he said.
Mr Gowda also welcomed the landmark judgement by the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court, striking down the National Judicial Appointments Commission for appointment of Judges.
