Assam CM Gogoi orders high-level inquiry into farmers' suicides

3,908 farmers committed suicide in last 14 years in Assam according to a report

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday ordered a high level inquiry into the farmers' suicide in the state in the last 14 years that appeared on a section of news papers.

According to an official release, Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) Subhash Chandra Das will inquire into the alleged farmers' suicide cases in the state.

Taking serious cognizance of the incidents of suicide allegedly by 3,908 farmers that appeared on a section of news paper, the chief minster ordered a probe into the chronology of incidents, it added.

The probe will be based on two key points -- the reasons of suicide and the preventive measures.

Moreover, Gogoi also requested the farmers in the state to approach District Agriculture Officer or Deputy Commissioner of the concerned district for any problem they face.

The government has also decided to set up Grievance Redressal Committee in the state to address the grievances of the farmers, the statement said.

"Moreover, such Grievance Redressal Committee would also be set up in the district, sub-division and block level to work in the interests of the farmers," Gogoi said.
