Standing desks offer no special health benefits

Indulging in regular physical activity is more important than sitting for less periods of time

Despite the several studies which claim that sitting at your desk for many hours is slowly killing us, recent findings indicate that even standing up at your desk doesn’t decrease your death risk unless you are physically active, according to The Washington Post.

Researchers at the University of Exeter and University College London studied 16 years’ worth of health data from 5,132 people. The participants were asked about the total time they spent sitting and how long they sat during four different situations – at work, watching television, leisure time and non-television leisure time. Researchers also noted down the time spent walking daily and on physical activity.

They discovered that the overall mortality risk for these participants wasn’t affected by long how they sat or by the kind of sitting. They stressed on the importance of physical activity more than avoiding sitting for long periods. These study findings were published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.
