Nizamabad: Nizamabad, a tiny district in Telangana state is mostly represented by women in top posts. Interestingly, the district has highest women population in the state as per 2011 Census.
Of four urban local bodies, Nizamabad Municipal Corporation, Kamareddy and Armoor municipalities are ruled by women leaders.
Involvement of women in politics, administration and workforce yielded good results for the last few months. Nizamabad district is known for its women force as they are in large numbers in the beedi industry and also a sizeable number in agriculture work. In search of livelihood, men from rural areas went to Gulf countries and this impacted population of the district.
As a result, women took full responsibility of the household and other work. Around five lakh women were engaged in the beedi industry and giving financial support to the families. With the involvement of women in agriculture yielding good results and many villages turned agriculturally progressive. Top private educational institutions in the district were led by the women entrepreneurs.
Padma, a social worker said that women had always taken up initiative in development work in Nizamabad district. Women’s role is significant in district affairs since a long time, she said. Usually women were encouraged because of their sincere and hard work, she opined. Women in the district expect better services for themselves by the women elected representatives and officials, but in vain, she said.
Interestingly, collector Dr Yogitha Rana and women officers of BC welfare, Markfed, horticulture, micro irrigation, Rajiv Vidya Mission and adult education departments are giving utmost importance to women related issues. The collector suggested that village development committees should increase women representation for comprehensive development of the villages.
Meanwhile, TRS MP Kalvakuntla Kavita, Congress MLC Akula Lalitha are also representing from Nizama-bad district and have been highlighting the women’s issues on the political dais. Everest mountaineer Malavath Purna, National hockey player Yendala Soundarya and International boxing champion Nikhat Zareen hails from Nizamabad district and motivated girls for high results.
In this context, Nizamabad Bar Association for the first time elected Swaroopa Rani as women president. On the same lines, medical fraternity elected Dr Kavitha Reddy as secretary of Indian Medical Association, Nizamabad unit.
It is also noted that Akula Sujatha is the mayor of Nizamabad Municipal Corporation and Pippari Sushma, Swathi Singh were serving as municipal chairpersons of Kamareddy and Armoor municipalities.
